Thoughts from the North
a look at the world from a different angle, by Salamander

HATS, HATLESS AND JESUS TOO

Where is the joy in this doom-laden sphere of dubious plenitude, meaningless to-ings and goings, wonders and blunders?

A Man walks ... weary, floor-gazing on legs of despair two, the usual - in and out of shops, waiting for some wife or girlfriend who, aroused, pouts and parades over shoes or inconsequential kitchen items. A World he cannot see. Frustration! Emptiness! A Life of meaningless proliferations who are educated and follow roads of no consequence until succumbing to physiology and the resultant birth of yet more mislead unfortunates. We stub our toes in boredom as the world spins its meaning - beyond our paltry projections. There is something missing here ... but what?

Where is the Joy?

What wallpaper should I buy? The back room needs to be done.

Where is the Joy?

A Luxurious Life of western ease ... we live and thrive on greater insecurities, testament to the mundane veneration of insignificance and all that television has to offer. (Touch The Truck!) We strive and hide behind ambition and progress - but where are we going that isn't the grave?

Where is the Joy?

The hat-flinging fifties, spinning joy of Trilby's piercing blue skies -or the joyful Teuton in accidental death as the flung phallic hats return earthwards. Better Days! But how now to celebrate? The hatless joy of drugs, the ineptitude of such drinking as expression - or the sweet joy of a hat, spinning, freely, skywards. A man has hope if he has a hat!

Where is the Joy?

Amongst many kinds of sadness we find the churchbound and regular too. We wear serious expressions and matching robes and follow those ceremonies for lack of want or ability to find that which gives us life - we sing the songs but we remain - hatless and lifeless.

And Jesus too - religion and hats - perhaps an enlightened man does not need such symbols of freedom but if we discuss religion should we not consider that, if only Jesus had cracked a few funnies and had the disciples back-slapped and gut-laughed, we might appreciate and have developed a truer sense of religion? A religion belonging to life and not to ceremony of joyless song and empty ritual.

May we long remember the hat thrown skywards - symbol of joy, freedom - that is religion - the hat spinning skywards.
